RIM are announcing a new product next week

New BlackBerry handsets could be on the way

blackberry_invite1

Research In Motion and the American mobile phone network AT&T has jointly sent out an invite, to an event being held next week in New York where its rumoured the BlackBerry slider 9800 or even the 9300 will be announced.

One Mobile Ring has been in touch with RIM in the UK to see if such an event is being mirrored in Blighty, where no details of such an event can be disclosed at this time.

The BlackBerry 9800 has been leaked for some months now, with images and video cropping up on the Internet showing the large Storm sized touch screen being slid down vertically - to expose a keyboard, which almost has the appearance of the newest Bold 9700.

The other phone that might be unveiled could be their 9300 handset, which also has seen leaked images and video appearing online of late only with higher frequency. This handset appears to be a cross between their low budget BlackBerry Curve 9250 model from last year, with the size and feel of their BlackBerry Curve 8900 from a few years back.

We’ll bring you more news of the announcement next week, with a hope there will be a similar UK unveiling in much the same way as RIM has done before with the Storm 2 and more recently, the Pearl 3G.

T-Mobile and Three start selling the iPhone 4 on Friday

Apples for the two Ts

iphone4

Mobile phone networks T-Mobile and Three both announced over Twitter today they will be retailing the Apple iPhone 4,  as of Friday this week.

Unveiled in a very low key way, whilst also showing the two networks have embraced social media was the unusual way they publicised they will be stocking the new iPhone, both in their shops and online too.

T-Mobile and Three have previously never sold Apple handsets directly, nor have they officially supported them on their own networks.

It has been reported their staff have undertaken sales training this week in preparation of the stores early opening hours on Friday morning, solely for the expectant rush of sales over the counter and also for those who have pre-registered and ordered the mobile phone in advance.

T-Mobile announced and confirmed the arrival of the new Apple mobile in the twitter message ” #iPhone 4 launching on T-Mobile on Friday July 30th. Official pricing announcement expected imminently “.

Mobile phone network Three was more subtle, by responding to a Tweet from a customer with the message ” iPhone 4 will be on sale in our stores from Friday!! ” .

T-Mobiles prices for the iPhone 4 were the highest of all the networks, although there could be a revision of the unwelcomed prices due to the end part of their message.

Three has the most competitive costing model of the larger networks, where they undercut most deals with a cost of just £99 on a £30 a month tariff.

Delay to updating the Orange HTC Hero is now over

Google OS 2.1 arriving next week

hero

Orange has forwarded on to the media an apology from HTC surrounding the massive delay to Android 2.1 arriving on their HTC Hero, whilst confirming at the same time the update will start rolling out next week.

Version 2.1 of the Google mobile phone OS has been appearing on handsets for some time this year, where it has taken quite a large part of 2010 to be ported across to older phone models.

In America, the mobile phone network Sprint has the update to their HTC Hero available to download and install since mid-May, where it’s taken some considerable time to be qualified by both HTC and Orange for the UK iteration of that very handset.

The HTC Sense overlay to Android might be partly responsible for the delay, as that overlay is deeply interwoven around the platform itself where Orange in addition has their own software installed on top of Android too.

The statement from HTC mentions: “We apologise for the delay in Orange Hero customers receiving their Éclair update. Testing the update across European markets took longer than anticipated. However, we hope to receive final approval by the end of the week and Orange handsets should start updating from next week.”

As with most updates of this nature there will be an Over The Air (OTA) notification message, although it’s much wiser to download the firmware update from Android 1.5 over WIFI as it could be as large as 118MB in size - if the USA update is anything to go by.

Nokia C6 handset now available on-line from Nokia

Latest social networking phone from the Finish Fone makers

nokiac61

Nokia’s new C6 Qwerty based keyboard mobile phone has gone on sale, via their own website at a cost of £289 SIM free and unlocked. The new mobile phone is also around on a contract with O2 and Vodafone, or just on a pay as you go deal with Vodafone.

Nokia’s latest mobile has a similar look to their flagship N97, along with its cut down version of the N97 Mini. The C6 tips up with a 3.2-inch 640×360 resistive touch screen, along with a slide-out physical Qwerty keyboard and a 5 megapixel camera whilst running their own Symbian S60 OS.

The budget social network orientated phone from Nokia has a wide range of social networking features built-in, along with access to various email systems from Gmail to Yahoo.

C6’s Qwerty keyboard slides out from under the screen, unlike their previous N97 handset whose keyboard slid opened in an angular fixed position when exposed.

Nokia’s on-line store was the first to show the C6 arrival within the UK, with other resellers and mobile phone networks closely following suit as the phone starts to arrive them with all.

HTC drops AMOLED screens from their handsets

Switching from Samsung to Sony displays

htc.jpg

HTC has announced it will stop using AMOLED screens on their mobile phones, in favour of the Super LCD displays in upcoming handsets and also on the HTC Desires and future Nexus Ones. This news comes a week after Google stopped selling the Nexus One phones directly, which could mean the mobiles will still continue to be made by HTC only for other vendors and mobile phone networks.

AMOLED displays that are currently within the more recent HTC handsets are manufactured by Samsung where rumour has it the demand is high and the supplies are running low, where the AMOLED screens are also plagued with poor visibility in sunlight as we’ve seen on One Mobile Ring.

The Super LCD (SLCD) displays are manufactured by Sony, where they are on a similar par to the AMOLED screens only LCD doesn’t traditionally suffer from the same sunlight-washout issues.

Super LCD’s will improve on battery life, as they don’t have the same drain on power resources as the AMOLED currently do in the HTC Desire. HTC also believe the viewing experience is comparable to that of an AMOLED display, with better possible viewing angles.

This new display technology is due to appear in handsets arriving on the shelves later this year, within the new models in addition to the updating the current range of phones which will be unknown to the end user.

Acer Android Stream handset arrives exclusive to eXpansys

Online mobile phone reseller calls first dibs on new phone

Acer’s first high-end Android mobile phone arrives solely with the Internet phone shop giant eXpansys, as of August the 9th SIM free and unlocked for £399.

Motorola’s Milestone Google OS driven phone also arrived in the UK the very same way for an exclusive period of time, which is a change from a handset network having sole custody of a mobile phone for a similar duration.

The Acer Stream is the company’s first venture into the high-end Android phone space, with HTC firmly dominating this area of late with the HTC Desire.

Acer’s Stream arrives running Android 2.1 with their own customised UI, running from a 3.7-inch AMOLED WVGA touch screen driven by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor where the 5 megapixel camera is capable of 720p HD video recording - that can be displayed through its mini-HDMI socket.

The latter of which is a spec that appears to be an upcoming trend with handsets, with the Motorola XT720 arriving last week in the UK with that same standard where there’s said to be more of a similar ilk on the way from others.

Apple confirms White iPhone 4 delay

It is more of a challenge to make than Black

gallery02-20100607

Apple has announced in a press statement to the media there will be a delay in bringing the white iPhone 4 to market, despite claiming at their recent press conference it will be available in July.

The statement comes after a month of waiting and the question constantly being asked to Apple store staff and also the handset resellers, as to when the white iPhone 4 will arrive with many supposedly holding out for that very model.

The announcement by Apple states: “White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year.”

No more further details than later this year have been given to the media, which will gravely upset those who saw the slide from their impromptu press conference of late that mentioned “End of July” for its arrival.

Rumours surrounding the delay are that the mass production of the cases or iPhone 4 bumpers has taken precedence, which would make perfect sense - as 3 million customers need them to be able to make and receive phone calls.

Weekly Review - 23rd of July

A week has passed since the world was holding its collective breath, waiting for the news of what Apple would say in their impromptu press conference over the iPhone 4’s signal issues. This was closely followed by the rest of the week spent scratching our collective heads, wandering around muttering - “a free case? That will resolve the signal problems?”.

The week began with the news of the much awaited Motorola handset arriving in the UK, which was closely followed by the news of Google’s own Nexus One about to run out of supplies. BlackBerry was featured in the news this week quite a lot, with the latest Pearl 3G arriving on Vodafone, the Storm 3 being leaked along with the multimedia features of the upcoming new OS being previewed.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

Last week ended with the Apple press conference, where it was expected they would address the issues over signal problems with the iPhone 4. The results of which was the offer of a free case, to all purchasers of their latest handset.

The free bumper that usually costs £25 is wrapped around the sides of the phone, which therefore prevents the “death grip” or where the handset holder makes contact between the break in two parts of the iPhone 4’s antenna - which reportedly results in the loss of signal.

Although the case will not resolve the issue entirely, it could effectively put a fairly literal plaster over the problem in the meantime.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

Google hit the news at the start of the week with the announcement of the HTC made Nexus One handset was about to make its last shipment, where after those supplies run out they will no longer be stocking the phone on their webstore.

Google has stated recently the Nexus One venture for them was a success, where they will continue to support the handset. They will also continue to sell the current stock of these handsets elsewhere in the world too, with their partners such as Vodafone in the UK.

The Android based handset was the first to be updated to Froyo, or version 2.2 of the Google mobile platform and is still a much sort after handset where it’s popular by developers.

At the very end of the week Google did actually run out of the Nexus One mobile phone, where the webstore selling the handset also closed up shop.

However, HTC Desire is still a good alternative and it is more or less the same phone.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

On Tuesday details of the new BlackBerry Storm 3 were leaked from a training presentation, where its features were captured on somewhat of a blurry picture. Listed are the features and functionality of the new device, along with how it differs from the Storm 2 launched last year.

The training presentation slide noted the new BlackBerry handset will only have a minor hardware overhaul, with no major differences in appearance between the Storm 2 and 3.

Brought in from the recent BlackBerry Perl 3G is the ability to access a 802.11n WIFI network, which was first seen in that candy bar designed phone. The RAM appears to have been doubled, from 256 to 512MB that will serve the applications running on the handset and the camera has gone from 3.1 megapixel camera, to a 5MP.

The most surprising addition is at the base of the captured image, which is the inclusion of a mobile hotspot application and is another term for MIFI.

Midweek, details were sent to the media over the BlackBerry 6 OS new multimedia features, where RIM listed in a blog post those abilities whilst at the same time mentioning in passing it will soon be releasing the platform.

RIM has worked on aspects of the way photos can be grouped together by event or date on the handset, where there is even a pinch-to-zoom-in feature in the upcoming operating system release for the BlackBerry handsets.

Also new to the OS 6 is the ability to share videos taken by the phone, with an integrated YouTube client that provides uploading straight to the video sharing website for all and sundry to see.

The emails opening line stated, “as you know RIM will soon be launching the eagerly awaited BlackBerry 6″ - although no firm dates have been established yet but a new OS usually ties in with a handset release.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

Around the middle of the week details emerged from an email that the Vodafone Google Nexus One will be getting Android 2.2 this or next week, according to the technology website Android Central.

The update being rolled out brings in the ability to natively view flash video content on the Nexus One, which has been with the USA Google handset owners for some time could be arriving in the UK anytime now.

However, it appears some of the States side version of Froyo on the HTC phone made for Google won’t be available. Stripped from the UK roll out of Android 2.2 is access to the Amazon MP3 store, along with Google Goggles that allows users to take pictures with their phone and then search the web with those images.

No mentioned of whether WIFI or USB tethering have been taken out, but we suspect they will be in tact along with the Flash video ability which effectively brings the handset on par with the HTC Desire.
Vodafone also announced this week they are now selling the BlackBerry Pearl 3G, Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro and LG Optimus. The latter of which is the start of a new range of Lucky Goldstar manufactured handsets, in which this is the first of 10 to appear under the Optimus brand name.

The Research In Motion BlackBerry Pearl 3G is their latest candy bar style of phone to arrive in the UK, which will be free on a £25 tariff, over 24 months which includes 300 minutes, unlimited texts and a 500MB data allowance.

The LG Optimus is only the South Korean phone maker’s second Android handset, which tips up with a 3-inch screen capable of displaying DivX/XviD video.

Sony Ericsson’s 2.6-inch screen based X10 Mini Pro is effectively the cut down version of their 4-inch screen Xperia X10 Google OS handset, where the Mini Pro just has a physical Qwerty keyboard bolted on to that smaller mobile phone.

Both the LG Optimus and SE X10 Mini Pro arrive gratis on a £20 tariff, over a 24 month period where 100 minutes are included within that deal, with 500 texts and a 500MB data allowance.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

At the end of the week Skype unveiled its latest iPhone 4 application, which takes advantage of the multitasking abilities. At the same time they announced they’re dropping the surcharge for 3G calling, which has been in place since May this year.

The iPhone 4 version of Skype will also be available to other devices that now run iOS 4, such as the iPhone 3GS and the more recent iPod Touch devices as the application uses the multitasking environment of the new operating system.

All of which means the communications software can be run in the background, waiting for a call or a message whilst the phone is used for other tasks and even when the phone is locked, the app is still active.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

Motorola’s Milestone XT720 Android handset arrived in the UK early on in the week, where the phone is the sequel to their keyboard based Android Milestone mobile phone only with HD recording and an HDMI socket.

The XT720 is an 8-megapixel camera capable of 720p recording and arrives with a miniHDMI socket, a 550Mhz processor and runs Android 2.1.

Based on the Moto Roi launched in South Korea early this year, it’s the first handset to arrive on our shores with this high definition socket built-in where the accompanying miniHDMI to HDMI cable is used to play all types of HD video content straight to a compatible screen.

The Moto phone started selling from around £360 to £380, although the much beefier 1Ghz processor, 4.3-inch screen Motorola Droid X is due later on this year where the Droid was the Milestone’s brand name in the States.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

And finally, an American company has produced a set of plasters or Band-aids for the iPhone 4 that cures the signal problems, by covering up the gap in-between the two parts of the case that if connected results in a signal loss.

Antenn-aid.com sells these band-aids in 6 different colours, all for $4.95 + packaging just in case you can no longer wait for your free case from Apple themselves.

The website states these Antenn-aids are precision engineered and when placed over the lower corner may improve performance, with a disclaimer mentioning it’s really only made for entertainment purposes.

When we first found out about the cases on offer as a result of Apple’s admission over the signal issues, we said these cases “effectively put a fairly literal plaster over the problem” - Antenn-aid is literally that plaster for the problem.

Google Nexus One sold out

On-line store closed for good

n1

Google has sold out of their own branded Nexus One Android handsets, where the webstore selling the mobile phone has also closed up shop.

Earlier this week we brought you news that Google will no longer be retailing its own SIM free and unlocked mobile phone, after the current shipment arriving this week runs out - well, now that has happened.

The HTC handset made for the Internet search engine giant is no more, with no more being ordered or requested by Google.

Vodafone in the UK is still selling the handset on a contract, but when those supplies run out they will be in the same proverbial boat as Google’s own webstore and will close up shop on retailing the phone too.

Google has made it clear they will continue to support the Nexus One, along with its partner mobile phone companies that have sold the handset but for how long, and through how many generations of Android is unclear.

Either way the first ever Google branded handset was seen as a success by the company, where its own CEO called it just that and they were pleased with the way things have gone.

Perhaps there will be another Google phone on the horizon, although we will have to waiting until Las Vegas’ CES in January or Barcelona’s Mobile World congress 2011 to find out.
