So, what can you offer me for £15 a month? - The Conclusion

Recently, we began a feature that surrounded £15 a month tariffs, comprising of what exactly they can offer within minutes, texts and data allowances. This also takes into account the free handsets accompanying those deals, in addition to SIM Only offers from the same networks.

Previously, we brought you news of the tariff details from the mobile phone networks Three, T-Mobile and Orange. This week we will wrap up with Vodafone and O2, followed by a break-down and what’s best within certain criteria’s.

Vodafone

O2 has both 12 and 24 month contracts on offer with free handsets as well, along with SIM only on-line deals.

The offer O2 presented to One Mobile Ring as their 24 month Handset tariff is accompanied by 100 minutes, with an unlimited text allowance.

An O2 Simplicity SIM 12-month contract comes with 600 any time any network minutes, unlimited UK texts and unlimited O2 to O2 calls or UK landline calls.

The Break Down

Breaking down all that’s on offer in the £15 tariff market place is a mean feat in itself, with close to 30 tariff deals from the various mobile phone networks. Taking into account the minutes on offer isn’t enough in choosing a tariff any more, it’s the text limits and more importantly these days - the data allowance. The most important question too is sometimes over looked, what handset accompanies the tariff, or what choices do I have.

After collating all of the details from companies such as T-Mobile, Orange, Three, Vodafone and O2 we have made some One Mobile Ring Editors choices as to what tariffs stand out. The following decisions do take into account the tariffs minutes, text and data allowance along with the handsets they have on offer.

The tariff with the highest range of phones has to go to O2, with 17 handsets to choose from on their standard 24-month tariff with 100 minutes and an unlimited text allowance.

The majority of the networks did actually offer an almost identical range of phones in their £15 tariffs, where the diversity across all the carriers weren’t as varied as we initially thought they would be. They were mostly budget models and non-popular handsets, where one network stood out by offering refurbished higher-end models and that was Three.

The tariff that came on top by providing the most minutes per month was Three, with their Internet Talker 500 24-month plan. This tariff comes with 500 minutes a month to any network, which beats even its closest rivals in minutes alone by 200 on Vodafone and T-Mobile.

There is a slight covet for the Internet Talker 500, where the minutes are traded off against the number of text messages sent in a month. That 500 figure is therefore taken down by 1 minute for every text message sent, whilst every minute used in calling takes the 500 text messages allowance down by 1.

We still believe this is an outstanding tariff, as although an unlimited text allowance offering sounds attractive on paper - 500 minutes in practice is a lot more useful.

Thrown in with the Internet Talker 500 is 5,000 minutes to any other Three mobile phone numbers, a 500MB data allowance a month where you also get free voicemail, Skype-to-Skype calls and Windows Live Messenger use.

Whilst we were writing this piece Three reduced this tariff from £15 a month, to £13 and therefore undercut the remit of the “So, what can you offer me for £15 a month?” feature. At the same time we believe they rejigged their handset deals, where most of the phones accompanying the deal now come in it at £17 and £18 - also slightly over the feature’s remit.

Three also offers the best SIM Only ‘30-day’ contract, which comes with 300 minutes, 3,000 texts, 2,000 Three-to-Three minutes and a 1GB data allowance with free voicemail, Skype-to-Skype calls and messages with free Windows Live Messenger use.

T-Mobile came close with their ‘30-day’ offering but they did come out on top with a 12-month SIM only deal, on minutes alone. This offer comprises of 600 minutes, 500 texts, with their flexible booster package of either unlimited texts, unlimited internet or unlimited T-Mobile calling.

Weekly Review – 30th of July

Apple began the week by announcing there will be a delay in delivering the iPhone 4 in white, where HTC also made public they will be dropping the AMOLED screens in favour of the Super LCD displays instead. A couple of new handsets went on sale this week, these were the Acer Android Stream phone and Nokia’s new smartphone the C6 and a trio of phones arrived on Three.

Orange made public this week an apology from HTC over the delay in rolling out the Hero Android update, where RIM and the American mobile network AT&T have scheduled a press event surrounding a new handset launch and finally, the iPhone 4 came to Three and T-mobile.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

Apple was in the news a few times this week, in one way or another surrounding delays, arrivals and being publically mocked by another mobile phone manufacturer.

The iPhone 4 maker started off the weeks’ news by announcing there’s a delay in bringing the white version of their latest phone to market, despite claiming at their recent press conference it will be available in July.

This statement comes after a month of waiting for the white iPhone 4 to arrive, with many supposedly holding out for that very model.

The announcement by Apple states: “White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year.”

Rumours surrounding the delay are that the mass production of the cases or iPhone 4 bumpers has taken precedence, which would make perfect sense - as 3 million customers need them to be able to make and receive phone calls.

Midweek, two mobile phone networks let slip they will be selling the iPhone 4 as of Friday where both T-Mobile and Three made their announcements over twitter

The two networks unveiled the news in a very low key way, whilst also showing the they have embraced social media.

T-Mobile announced and confirmed the arrival of the new Apple mobile in the twitter message ” #iPhone 4 launching on T-Mobile on Friday July 30th. Official pricing announcement expected imminently “.

Mobile phone network Three was more subtle, by responding to a Tweet from a customer with the message ” iPhone 4 will be on sale in our stores from Friday!! ” .

Three has the most competitive costing model of the larger networks, where they undercut most deals with a cost of just £99 on a £30 a month tariff.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

At the start of the week, Acer made public their Android Stream handset will arrive exclusively with on-line phone reseller eXpansys.

Acer’s first high-end Android mobile tips up on August the 9th SIM free and unlocked for £399, in much the same way as Motorola’s Milestone Google OS driven phone also went on sale in the past for an exclusive period of time.

Acer’s Stream arrives running Android 2.1 with their own customised UI, running from a 3.7-inch AMOLED WVGA touch screen driven by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor where the 5 megapixel camera is capable of 720p HD video recording - that can be displayed through its mini-HDMI socket.

Also early on in the week, Nokia’s new C6 handset appeared for sale on-line from their own retail store.

Their C6 Qwerty based keyboard mobile phone arrived for £289 SIM free and unlocked, although contracts are available with O2 and Vodafone.

Nokia’s latest mobile has a similar look to their flagship N97, along with its cut down version of the N97 Mini. The C6 tips up with a 3.2-inch 640×360 resistive touch screen, along with a slide-out physical Qwerty keyboard and a 5 megapixel camera whilst running their own Symbian S60 OS.

C6’s Qwerty keyboard slides out from under the screen, unlike their previous N97 handset whose keyboard slid opened in an angular fixed position when exposed.

At the end of the week Three announced a Trio of new handsets on their One Plan, which were the Sony Ericsson Zylo, Nokia E63 and Nokia 5230.

The One Plan is a £25 a month tariff, which offers 2,000 minutes to any network, a further 5,000 minutes to any other Three mobile phone numbers, 5,000 texts and 1GB data allowance - which is one of the most competitive deals around today.

The Sony Ericsson Zylo is their recent 2.6-inch screen Walkman phone, with a slide out T9 keypad along with a 3.2 megapixel camera and memory that can be expanded to 16GB from a microSD card.

Nokia’s E63 builds on the success of the E71 BlackBerry-esque handset, with a large Qwerty keyboard, which is accompanied by a 2.4-inch display where there’s also free 6 months Spotify premium account access.

The Nokia 5230 is their large touch screen music orientated mobile phone, which runs their Symbian platform and has access to the Ovi store and is also accompanied by free 6 months access to premium Spotify account
—————————————————————————————————————————————-

HTC was also in the news this week, with an update to the Hero and an announcement they will be changing their screens in the future.

The mobile phone manufacture made public they will be dropping AMOLED, whilst replacing them with Super LCD displays in future models and bringing it into current ranges such as the HTC Desires and future Nexus Ones.

AMOLED displays that are currently within the more recent HTC handsets are manufactured by Samsung where rumour has it the demand is high and the supplies are running low, where the AMOLED screens are also plagued with poor visibility in sunlight.

The Super LCD (SLCD) displays are manufactured by Sony, where they are on a similar par to the AMOLED screens only LCD doesn’t traditionally suffer from the same sunlight-washout issues.Super LCD’s will improve on battery life, as they don’t have the same drain on power resources as the AMOLED currently do in the HTC Desire.

This new display technology is due to appear in handsets arriving on the shelves later this year, within the new models in addition to the updating the current range of phones which will be unknown to the end user.

Orange made public mid-week an apology from HTC over the massive delay to Android 2.1 arriving on their HTC Hero, where Éclair has been on the American mobile phone network Sprint since mid-May.

The HTC Sense overlay to Android might be partly responsible for the delay, as that overlay is deeply interwoven around the platform itself where Orange in addition has their own software installed on top of Android too.

The statement from HTC mentions: “We apologise for the delay in Orange Hero customers receiving their Éclair update. Testing the update across European markets took longer than anticipated. However, we hope to receive final approval by the end of the week and Orange handsets should start updating from next week.”
—————————————————————————————————————————————-

Research In Motion and the American mobile phone network AT&T jointly sent out an invite towards the end of the week, to an event being held in New York.

It’s rumoured the BlackBerry slider 9800 or even the Curve 9300 will be announced on August the 3rd.

The BlackBerry 9800 has been leaked for some months now, with images and video cropping up on the Internet showing the large Storm sized touch screen being slid down vertically - to expose a keyboard, which almost has the appearance of the newest Bold 9700.

The other phone that might be unveiled could be their 9300 handset, which also has seen leaked images and video appearing online of late only with higher frequency. This handset appears to be a cross between their low budget BlackBerry Curve 9250 model from last year, with the size and feel of their BlackBerry Curve 8900 from a few years back.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

And finally, Motorola mocked Apple this week in adverts that appeared in The New York Times newspaper and also on their own website.

Moto raised the issues that ‘No Jacket’ is required for using their own handsets, as it doesn’t need a case to work properly where just holding their latest Driod X mobile in a certain way doesn’t result in a loss of signal.

Motorola placed a large advert in the New York Times newspaper that mocks Apple, where they really bring to attention the problems over the iPhone 4’s reception faults and in a very not so subtle or understated way.

The advert starts with the very large letters ‘No Jacket Required’, stamping home in the largest possible way their message that a case isn’t needed. The ad then draws attention to the features of the Droid X, whilst highlighting and pointing out around the sides of the phone how it betters the iPhone 4 - in what can only be described as an attack ad of the highest order.

It is the statement at the bottom that really digs in knife, and then turns it.

“At Motorola, we believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly”

“That’s why the Driod X comes with a dual antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make a crystal clear call without a bulky phone jacket”

“For us it’s just one of those things that comes as a given when you’ve been making mobile phones for over 30 years”

All of which is a great and funny way to sell your upcoming phone we believe at One Mobile Ring, whilst at the same time highlighting the flaws of others and possibly having to pay rights to Phil Collins along the way.

Motorola mocks Apple in ads

‘No Jacket Required’

nojacket

Motorola has taken to ridiculing Apple’s iPhone 4 signal issues, whilst promoting their own handsets at the same time in the USA. Moto has taken to raising the issues that ‘No Jacket’ is required for using their own handsets, as it doesn’t need a case to work properly where just holding their latest Driod X mobile in a certain way doesn’t result in a loss of signal.

The Motorola website now holds this image to your right, which backs this latest campaign of theirs that highlights their Android mobiles do not suffer the same problems as the iPhone 4 and a case isn’t needed for the phone just to make a call.

Moto has gone on to place a large advert in the New York Times newspaper this week that just further mocks Apple, where they really bring to attention the problems over the iPhone 4’s reception faults and in a very not so subtle or understated way.

The most obvious nod to Apple is the ‘Dual Antenna design, one at the top of the phone and one at the bottom’, clearly highlighting how better the reception is over the iPhone 4 and the Motorola handset won’t be plagued with the same issues.

RIM are announcing a new product next week

New BlackBerry handsets could be on the way

blackberry_invite1

Research In Motion and the American mobile phone network AT&T has jointly sent out an invite, to an event being held next week in New York where its rumoured the BlackBerry slider 9800 or even the 9300 will be announced.

One Mobile Ring has been in touch with RIM in the UK to see if such an event is being mirrored in Blighty, where no details of such an event can be disclosed at this time.

The BlackBerry 9800 has been leaked for some months now, with images and video cropping up on the Internet showing the large Storm sized touch screen being slid down vertically - to expose a keyboard, which almost has the appearance of the newest Bold 9700.

This handset appears to be a cross between their low budget BlackBerry Curve 9250 model from last year, with the size and feel of their BlackBerry Curve 8900 from a few years back.

We’ll bring you more news of the announcement next week, with a hope there will be a similar UK unveiling in much the same way as RIM has done before with the Storm 2 and more recently, the Pearl 3G.

T-Mobile and Three start selling the iPhone 4 on Friday

Apples for the two Ts

iphone4

Mobile phone networks T-Mobile and Three both announced over Twitter today they will be retailing the Apple iPhone 4,  as of Friday this week.

Unveiled in a very low key way, whilst also showing the two networks have embraced social media was the unusual way they publicised they will be stocking the new iPhone, both in their shops and online too.

T-Mobile and Three have previously never sold Apple handsets directly, nor have they officially supported them on their own networks.

It has been reported their staff have undertaken sales training this week in preparation of the stores early opening hours on Friday morning, solely for the expectant rush of sales over the counter and also for those who have pre-registered and ordered the mobile phone in advance.

T-Mobiles prices for the iPhone 4 were the highest of all the networks, although there could be a revision of the unwelcomed prices due to the end part of their message.

Three has the most competitive costing model of the larger networks, where they undercut most deals with a cost of just £99 on a £30 a month tariff.

Delay to updating the Orange HTC Hero is now over

Google OS 2.1 arriving next week

hero

Orange has forwarded on to the media an apology from HTC surrounding the massive delay to Android 2.1 arriving on their HTC Hero, whilst confirming at the same time the update will start rolling out next week.

Version 2.1 of the Google mobile phone OS has been appearing on handsets for some time this year, where it has taken quite a large part of 2010 to be ported across to older phone models.

In America, the mobile phone network Sprint has the update to their HTC Hero available to download and install since mid-May, where it’s taken some considerable time to be qualified by both HTC and Orange for the UK iteration of that very handset.

As with most updates of this nature there will be an Over The Air (OTA) notification message, although it’s much wiser to download the firmware update from Android 1.5 over WIFI as it could be as large as 118MB in size - if the USA update is anything to go by.

Nokia C6 handset now available on-line from Nokia

Latest social networking phone from the Finish Fone makers

nokiac61

Nokia’s new C6 Qwerty based keyboard mobile phone has gone on sale, via their own website at a cost of £289 SIM free and unlocked. The new mobile phone is also around on a contract with O2 and Vodafone, or just on a pay as you go deal with Vodafone.

The budget social network orientated phone from Nokia has a wide range of social networking features built-in, along with access to various email systems from Gmail to Yahoo.

C6’s Qwerty keyboard slides out from under the screen, unlike their previous N97 handset whose keyboard slid opened in an angular fixed position when exposed.

Nokia’s on-line store was the first to show the C6 arrival within the UK, with other resellers and mobile phone networks closely following suit as the phone starts to arrive them with all.

HTC drops AMOLED screens from their handsets

Switching from Samsung to Sony displays

htc.jpg

HTC has announced it will stop using AMOLED screens on their mobile phones, in favour of the Super LCD displays in upcoming handsets and also on the HTC Desires and future Nexus Ones. This news comes a week after Google stopped selling the Nexus One phones directly, which could mean the mobiles will still continue to be made by HTC only for other vendors and mobile phone networks.

AMOLED displays that are currently within the more recent HTC handsets are manufactured by Samsung where rumour has it the demand is high and the supplies are running low, where the AMOLED screens are also plagued with poor visibility in sunlight as we’ve seen on One Mobile Ring.

The Super LCD (SLCD) displays are manufactured by Sony, where they are on a similar par to the AMOLED screens only LCD doesn’t traditionally suffer from the same sunlight-washout issues.

Super LCD’s will improve on battery life, as they don’t have the same drain on power resources as the AMOLED currently do in the HTC Desire. HTC also believe the viewing experience is comparable to that of an AMOLED display, with better possible viewing angles.

This new display technology is due to appear in handsets arriving on the shelves later this year, within the new models in addition to the updating the current range of phones which will be unknown to the end user.

Acer Android Stream handset arrives exclusive to eXpansys

Online mobile phone reseller calls first dibs on new phone

b200516

Acer’s first high-end Android mobile phone arrives solely with the Internet phone shop giant eXpansys, as of August the 9th SIM free and unlocked for £399.

Motorola’s Milestone Google OS driven phone also arrived in the UK the very same way for an exclusive period of time, which is a change from a handset network having sole custody of a mobile phone for a similar duration.

The Acer Stream is the company’s first venture into the high-end Android phone space, with HTC firmly dominating this area of late with the HTC Desire.

The latter of which is a spec that appears to be an upcoming trend with handsets, with the Motorola XT720 arriving last week in the UK with that same standard where there’s said to be more of a similar ilk on the way from others.
